Biographical history

As a result of the reorganization of Defence Council, the Minister, on 16 Sept.1940, authorized the establishment of the Army Committee which changed its name to Army Council on 18 Oct.1948. It was composed of the Minister of National Defence, the Deputy Minister of National Defence, the Chief of the General Staff, the Vice Chief of the General Staff, the Adjutant General, the Quartermaster General and the Master General of the Ordnance. Its functions were to advise the Minister on matters of policy affecting the Army and to consider matters of administration and procedure which may affect more than one branch, with a view to integrating and improving the Army Services, and to make recommendations to the Minister. After 1951, the Minister of National Defence and the Deputy Minister of National Defence ceased to attend meetings. In July 1964, the Army Council was abolished.
