Scope and content

Fonds consists of C.E. Hope’s specimen catalogue from 1927-1937, 24 bird observation journals from 1926-1952 with an index to the first 7 volumes, notes and correspondence from the Fort Severn Expedition, two copies of the manuscript for a book entitled Birds of the Favourable Lake Mine, Patricia Portion of Kenora, ON, and a collection of specific notes of various bird species. The specimen catalogue of 1927-1937 is in three volumes and organized by bird species, but not in taxonomic order. Each entry is numbered and gives both the common and Latin names of the bird, as well as information on the sex and wingspan of the specimen and where it was collected. The 24 volumes of bird observation journals are organized chronologically and most give detailed notes on bird observations on a day by day basis, with information on the area, time of day, weather conditions, and species observed. In contrast, volumes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are organized quite differently and list the birds observed, and nests found, in addition to more detailed notes on bird observations. The Fort Severn expedition notes and correspondence consist of several typewritten pages about the 1940 expedition as well as several letters dating between 1932 and 1952 from fellow naturalists and ornithologists. The two manuscripts of Birds of the Favourable Lake Mine, Patricia Portion of Kenora, ON are typewritten and edited. This book [?] represents C.E. Hope’s research on bird life in the Patricia portion of Kenora that makes up nearly one third of Ontario. The collection of detailed notes on birds species are handwritten notes organized by species, but not in taxonomic order. Each entry is titled by the bird’s common name with the Latin name as a sub-title, and contains information such as the species’ nesting habits, when and where the specimen or nest was located, measurements of the eggs and nest, observations on the species’ behaviour, and information on bird specimens that were collected. In addition, there are 16 black and white photographs included in this file, most of which are glued into the section they are related to. Another important note is that each species has been numbered, but the system of numbering is not related to the catalogue of specimens that Hope compiled. Fonds is comprised of the following series: SC 33-1: Specimen catalogue SC 33-2: Bird observation journals SC 33-3: Fort Severn expedition records SC 33-4: Birds of the Favourable Lake Mine, Kenora SC 33-5: Species notes
