Custodial history
This partial diary was found in 1943 at the librarian, E.C. Kyte, of Queen's University Library and then sent to Knox College Library. It then made its way to the Presbyterian Church in Canada Archives. In 1991, the Deputy Archivist at the Presbyterian Archives, Kim Arnold, sent it to N.B. Millet, curator of the ROM's Egyptian Department. It was then sent to the ROM Archives in 1994 by Roberta Shaw.
Scope and content
Item is a partial diary of an unknown woman travelling in Egypt, likely in 1859. The writer travelled along the Nile river to Dendera, Philae, Aswan, Edfu (which she spells 'Edfoo'), Thebes and Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Saqqara, Memphis, Cairo, and Alexandria. The diary gives quite detailed notes regarding the sights the author saw and her experiences while travelling. The writer was probably travelling with family, as she mentions her Uncle being there with her. A Mr. F. is mentioned as well along with a Mr. Taylor who was supposed to preach in one of the temple ruins. Also mentioned is Knox College, where the author intended to donate antiquities she acquired in Egypt.

General note
The only information that the writer gives on the dates of her travels are the day of the week and day of the month. February and April are mentioned, but information as to the year is not. With the dates 'Friday, February 25th,' and 'Tuesday, April 5th,' the diary cannot be from 1865 (as originally thought) - February 25 was a Saturday in 1865. The nearest possible year with both of those specific dates was 1859.
