Scope and content
Fonds consists of Dippie’s bird observation notes from across Canada, an extract from his diary, as well as one item of correspondence from R.W. Fish to Dippie. The notes are organized geographically, and contain information about the location of the bird nests, where they were found, the date, bird behaviour, how many eggs he took, and the species of bird he observed or collected. The Saskatchewan and N.W. Canada notes are less detailed and merely list the species that were caught, with brief information on date, location, as well as the age and gender of the specimen. The Banff notes also include a list of mammal species that he observed there. The diary extracts were typed up by B.W. Cartwright on March 15th, 1930, and contain mostly Toronto entries, as well as entries on his trip to Raeburn, Manitoba. The letter from R.W. Fish is in regards to a heron specimen that Dippie was interested in purchasing. The letter has a note written by Dippie stating that the quality of the specimen was not worth the asking price. This file also contains a short list of specimens collected by Dippie from 1893-1898.
