Henry Howitt donated his journals to the Library of the University of Toronto on May 25, 1961; it is not known how they ended up in the ROM Archives.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of two volumes of Henry Howitt's journals of nature observations in the Guelph, Ont. Area. The majority of the first volume is made up of observations from 1924 and 1925, with a few entries for 1922, 1923, and the first half of 1926. The second volume begins with July 18, 1926, and continues to February 13, 1941, with some years containing only a few entries. Each entry unusually begins with notes on the weather conditions, and then records the birds and occasionally the animals observed. Howitt frequently carried out his observations during hunting trips with friends, and he recorded the animals and birds killed, as well as descriptions. It appears that he confined his shooting to food animals such as rabbits and partridges.
