Biographical history

Edward A. Carey, was born in Bedford, England, in 1835 to Edward Carey, Senior, and his wife, the sister of Captain Orlebar of the British surveying service. Edward A. assisted his uncle and Admiral Bayfield in their survey of the Gulf of St. Laurence. He later became the assistant of the Newfoundland Surveys. He married Caroline Amelia (1835-1890), daughter of Dr. John MacKieson and Matilda Brecken of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 13 October 1857. They had four children. Edward died in 1865 while a resident of King's Square, Charlottetown.

Biographical history

Dr. John MacKieson was born in Scotland on 16 October 1795. He became a licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons at Glasgow in 1815. Dr. MacKieson moved to Prince Edward Island in 1821 and immediately established a medical practice. He married Matilda Brecken on 11 February 1830 and they had a family of six children, two of whom died in infancy. Their daughter Caroline Amelia (1835-1890) married Edward A. Carey on 13 October 1857. They had four children.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of genealogical information, newspapers clippings, photographs, and correspondence of various members of the Carey and MacKieson families of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Also included are a log book of Edward A. Carey and Dr. John MacKieson's medical degree. Many of the items are not dated.
