Biographical history

Charles (Charlie) Smith was born in England and came to Canada to farm on the Prairies. He served in the Canadian Navy in World War I and after the war settled on the Queen Charlotte Islands. He preempted land in the Silver Lake region and ran a cattle ranch. He became an engineer for the Langara Fishing and Packing Company at Masset in 1927. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was the Cape St. James Lighthouse keeper and during World War II was the Chief Observer for the RCAF Aircraft Detection Corps Cape St. James Post. In the 1950s, he worked as a commercial fisherman with his son.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Smith's personal and business correspondence, household journals, banking records, receipts, memos and notes, reference material (including clippings), records of observations from Cape St. James Lighthouse and maps of the Queen Charlotte Islands and the north coast of B.C. Fonds includes records of the Cape St. James Post of the RCAF Aircraft Detection Corps during World War II including logs, assignment books, inventories, and meteorological records. Fonds also includes records of the Masset Timber Company from the 1940s including a logs record book and requisitions.
