The Fernie and District Historical Association, now known as the Fernie and District Historical Society, was established in 1964. Its mandate has always included the acquisition of archival material. Its museum opened on August 4, 1979 in the former Catholic Rectory building. In 1999 the Catholic Church reclaimed the property. A temporary museum was opened in 2004 and a few years later moved into a combined museum and visitor information centre space.
