Biographical history

Gaby, de son vrai nom Gabriel Desmarais, est né en 1926 à Marieville. À l’âge de 18 ans, il achète un appareil photo Voigtländer et suit des cours de photographie par correspondance de l’American School of Photography de Chicago. Il ouvre son studio en 1946 et prend le pseudonyme de « Gaby ». Peu à peu, les journaux et revues publient ses œuvres et Gaby se spécialise dans la photographie de théâtre. Considéré comme l’un des meilleurs portraitistes de sa génération, il parcourt le monde en offrant ses services aux plus grandes personnalités internationales. Il a ainsi photographié des politiciens (Charles de Gaulle, Lester B. Pearson, Léopold Sedar Senghor, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill) et des artistes compositeurs, musiciens, chanteurs, comédiens et écrivains (Glenn Gould, Max Steiner, Rudolf Serkin, Fred Astaire, Ludmilla Chiriaeff, Gene Kelly, Louis Armstrong, Bette Davis, Kirk Douglas, Harold Lloyd, Omar Sharif, Charles Aznavour, Maurice Chevalier, Henri Salvador, Jean Cocteau, Jean Marais, Michèle Morgan). Après avoir vécu en Californie (Hollywood), il s’installe à Monaco pour revenir par la suite au Québec. Il meurt à Montréal en mai 1991, à l’âge de 65 ans
