Biographical history

Fils de Charles Castonguay et de Rose Vanier, Jules-Alexandre Castonguay naît le 24 avril 1877 dans la paroisse Saint-Michel de Vaudreuil. Il passe sa jeunesse dans son village natal. En 1901, la famille déménage à Ottawa. Il est d'abord policier dans le Dominion canadien entre 1903 et 1905. Par la suite, il devient photographe. Dès 1906, nous retrouvons son nom au répertoire des photographes professionnels d'Ottawa, alors que son tout premier studio est situé dans Little Sussex. Il a également un studio dans la rue Dalhousie entre 1915 et 1929. Dans les années 1940, le studio est détruit par un incendie et plusieurs plaques sont perdues. Jules-Alexandre Castonguay n'a pas suivi de cours en photographie, ni travaillé pour aucun autre photographe professionnel. À 51 ans, il épouse Bernadette Duguay, sa jeune assistante de 20 ans. Ils auront sept enfants. Il décède le 22 novembre 1972.
