Dismissals of Professors Bland, Parry, and Smith

  • UWA WC-10
  • Series
  • 1970

File consists of records compiled concerning three controversial dismissals of professors by Wesley College: Dr. S.G. Bland in 1917, Dr. T.J. Parry in 1922, and Dr. W.G. Smith in 1922. Bland was dismissed for financial constraints; Parry was dismissed because Principal Riddell found his work unsatisfactory; Smith was dismissed due to a purported combination of usurping Principal Riddell's authority and spreading radical religious opinions. The first two cases were investigated by the Methodist Church, since the men also were Ministers and had been hired to teach Theology subjects. Dr. Smith was invited from Toronto to teach Sociology and his case was taken to court. The documents include official reports, notes, memos, and correspondence. Series is arranged into seven files -- the first two are for Bland and Parry, respectively, while the remaining 5 are for Smith. Bland's file contains a biographical paper written on in 1970. Smith's files are divided by the type of document, including two trial transcriptions.
