Toronto General Hospital ephemera collection

The Toronto General Hospital ephemera collection is an assembly of material in various formats that have been accumulated by the UHN Archives from a variety of disparate sources including, but not limited to, family members of former staff or students, other repositories, or anonymous donations. Collection consists of textual records, publications, photographs and objects. Material in the collection relates to the history of the hospital, its staff or students.

File 2 contains a recipe for Butter Soup, directions for making lactic acid milk from culture, and notes on letterhead for Dr. Miriam A. Brick.

File 12 includes photos of J.R.F. (Frank) Mills, Bruce Tovee, Wallace Scott, Roche Robertson, L.C. Mongomery, J.A. MacFarlane, and an Oxford Vaporizer (Anaesthesia Machine).

File 14 includes pictures of Drs. E.H. Botterell, K.G. McKenzie and Tom Morley, from Neurosurgery, and Dr. Mary Tom from Neuropathology.

Patient records

Sub-series consists of confidential medical records of patients treated by the Special Treatment Clinic. Files contain examination reports, patient histories, treatment records, prescriptions, and forms specific to the treatment and reporting of venereal disease.

Administrative records

Sub-series consists of minutes of clinic staff meetings, policy statements and medical notes issued by clinic administrators for the direction of staff in providing treatment and complying with Ontario Department of Health regulations and procedures concerning the reporting and treatment of venereal disease cases, correspondence of the Director of the Clinic, and statistics compiled by the Clinic documenting the volume and type of treatment provided.

TGH Sesquicentennial Celebrations

Sub-series consists of miscellaneous materials created and collected by the Public Relations Department in the course of planning and managing events in celebration of the Hospital’s 150th anniversary in 1979. Materials include correspondence, financial records, publications, advertising and fundraising literature, minutes of meetings and event programs.

Newspaper clippings

Sub-series consists of newspaper clippings pertinent to the TGH supplied under contract to the Public Relations Department by the Canadian Press Clippings Service. Clippings are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Medical Staff Bulletin

Sub-series consists of copies of the TGH medical staff newsletter, successively titled Mediscope (1970-1971), Medi-Staff (1971), and Medical Staff Bulletin (1972). The newsletter contained news and announcements of interests to the TGH medical staff, including appointments, retirements, research and publications.

Monitor

Sub-series consists of copies of Monitor, a community newsletter “for staff and friends of TGH.” Monitor was published monthly 1968-1982, then quarterly 1983-1989. Files are incomplete, especially for 1968-1973.

Generally Speaking

Sub-series consists of copies of Generally Speaking, a weekly newsletter for TGH staff, published June 4, 1982 to March 31, 1989. Generally Speaking was succeeded by The Toronto Hospital staff newsletter, Caring.

The newsletter contains news and announcements, including staff appointments and retirements; special events; changes to Hospital services and facilities, obituaries etc.
