Ray Lawson fonds

Fonds consists of photographs, films, speeches, correspondence, and other records created or received by Ray Lawson, and representing his public, private, and business affairs.

The fonds' contents exist in a variety of formats. Photographs show Lawson and others at official and private events. A film depicts Lawson engaging in official functions as Lieutenant Governor. Lawson made numerous speeches as Lieutenant Governor and as Canada's Consul General in New York City. Many of these speeches are contained in the fonds and are arranged chronologically.

The correspondence primarily consists of letters and telegrams to Lawson from political and business associates, as well as from his friends and family. Much of the correspondence congratulates Lawson on becoming an Officer of the British Empire in 1943 and on being appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in December, 1946. Subject files include documents relating to Canada House (the building that housed the Canadian consulate in New York), a guestbook kept in the Lawson household between 1922 and 1948, and other materials related to Lawson's activities and interests.

G.A. Farini fonds

Fonds consists of the records of Senior Guillermo Antonio Farini. Fonds includes manuscripts and notes for his various books such as The History of World War I. Also included are more than forty patents and nine specifications for his inventions. Fonds also contains Farini's autobiographical and biographical materials. In addition, fonds contains Anna Farini's records, 1835-1945, including her diaries, personal and business correspondence, as well as her will. Also included are 96 photographs, mostly of Farini, Anna, Lulu and various circus scenes. Fonds also contains 19 paintings by Farini. In addition, fonds includes 3 maps of South Africa and the Kalahari area. Fonds also includes 3 artifacts: Farini's signature stamp; a leather pouch with his Masonic lodge apron and membership; and a carved wooden lithograph block.

Charles James Foy fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to Foy's involvement with the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, including a minute book of the Perth, Ontario branch, material accumulated by Foy as their legal advisor, and minutes of Grand Council meetings. It also contain documents relating to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, including correspondence accumulated by Foy as National Vice- President and Provincial President, and periodicals. The fonds also contains pamphlets and other publications for these two groups, as well as the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Frank Earle Schoonover fonds

The fonds consists mainly of the records produced during Frank Schoonover's 1911 Quebec expedition. Content of photos includes scenery, photos of canoes and canoeing, campsites, fur trapping, toboganning, dog sleds, and campsite cooking. Also included are shots of Cap Rouge, La Tranche and Hudson's Bay posts at Lory Lake and Point Bleue. Photos depict native peoples, their transportation (canoes and dog sleds), habitations and graves. Other areas represented in the photos include Quebec City, the Lac-St. Jean area, the Ottawa Valley, and the 1000 Islands area of the St. Lawrence. Also included are letters to his parents and girl friend, Florence, which describe the cold winter environment, technical problems with photographic equipment, and the techniques of personal comfort and survival in the wilderness. Fonds also contains some letters by Brigadier Harrison, Quebec, encouraging him in his work, a letter to his wife during the 1911 expedition, and a souvenir photo of himself from Jack London, in congratulations for the success of the 1903-04 expedition.

Leslie Rowntree fonds

Fonds consists primarily of Leslie Rowntree’s speech files between 1957 and 1968, arranged chronologically. Speeches are primarily on topics of Ministerial concern. Fonds also contains a small amount of textual material from Rowntree’s other activities, including some correspondence (mostly directed to him as a Minister, although not filed with other Minister’s papers), and files from the Marine Club, a private organization to which he belonged. Photographs include an album commemorating Rowntree’s successful election campaign in 1959, and other photographs documenting Rowntree’s political career.

Alfred Hayward family fonds

Fonds consists of records of Caroline Hayward and her son Gerald. Caroline Hayward's records include travel diaries of her trip from New York to Kingston, undertaken in 1843. Fonds also contains typed copies of her prose works, and a photocopy of a sketch of Gore's Landing drawn around 1849. Records of Gerald Hayward include an autobiographical sketch, part of his diary while resident in New York, and a printed booklet authored by Hayward, "The Canadian Cot, a Little Bed in the East London Hospital for Children" from 1875.

John Galt fonds

Fonds consists various records of John Galt. Fonds includes correspondence, poetry and songs, plays, prose writings, notebooks, and other records. Correspondence includes letters regarding: compensation for losses suffered in the War of 1812; land deals with the British Colonial Office; exploration and road building; the settlement of Guelph; and Galt’s writing career. Galt’s poetry includes long format poems, sonnets, short poems, and printed poems, including ‘Judith,’ and ‘The Burial of St. Joseph’. Plays include full copies and portions of various plays, including ‘The Vassal,’ and ‘The Wallace - a Tragedy’. Galt’s prose writing includes works entitled ‘The Divorce,’ ‘Antiquity,’ ‘American Diplomacy,’ ‘Dirk Glades,’ 'The wonderful fish,’ and ‘Journal of a witness to the Truth.’ Also included are writings concerning: T. Paleologus; commerce in the reign of Elizabeth I, and the history of English commerce.
