John McGougan (1861-1933) was the son of Neil (1822-1905) and Lilly McGougan (1823-1906) of Lot 18. John worked as a carpenter ca. 1891, operated a grocery store in Kensington for many years, and had at least one sibling, James K. McGougan (1854-?).
John married Barbara MacLeod (1868-1963), daughter of Kenneth and Margaret MacPherson MacLeod of Irishtown, Prince Edward Island. One of eight children, her siblings were Annie, Eliza, Alma, George, Andrew, Edgar, and her twin sister Margaret. John and Barbara had one daughter, Margaret Lillian, who died at five years of age in 1909.

Title based on the provenance of the fonds
This fonds consists of three scrapbooks (1877-1899; 1901-1912; 1936) belonging to Barbara McGougan as well as two diaries, dating 1910 - 1912 and 1914 - 1916, written by John McGougan. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings of poems, deaths, marriages, and current events. Also included are pictures (unidentified), wedding invitations, and MacLeod family genealogy. The diaries contain references to the weather, family members, and church and prayer meetings held at the Indian River church.
The scrapbooks in this fonds are three of the thirty to fourty scrapbooks estimated to have been compiled by Barbara MacLeod throughout her lifetime.
The first scrapbook (1877-1899) is very fragile.
