Biographical history
John Edwin McLauchlan [McLaughlin], the son of James McLauchlan, was born 10 December 1849 in Woodstock, Carleton County, New Brunswick. He and his wife Annie McGuire had no fewer than five children: Bessie L. (1879-1965), T. Harold (b. 1882), Willard Roy (1885-1919), Charles Guy, and Annie (b. 1897).
In May 1877 John E. McLauchlan and Robert B. Jones opened a dry goods store in Woodstock. Jones & McLauchlan sold ready-made clothing, hats, caps, and other merchandise. In June 1879 John McLauchlan bought Jones's interest in the enterprise, and renamed it The John McLauchlan Co., Ltd. It was also known as The John McLaughlan Company Limited and The John McLaughlan Co., Ltd. Apparently a branch store was opened at Hartland, north of Woodstock. Guy, Roy, and Bessie McLauchlan worked with their father in the store.
Beyond business interests, John McLauchlan was active in the community. He was a member of the local fire department for approximately 30 years and sat on the Woodstock town council for eight. He was twice asked to become mayor by acclamation. John E. McLauchlan died at Woodstock on 8 May 1932.
His son Charles Guy McLauchlan was born 10 August 1885 at Woodstock. Educated locally, he married Elsie Florence Everett (1889-1940) in 1910, and they had two children: Ronald Everett (1911-1941) and George Douglas. In 1902 Guy McLauchlan joined 1st Brighton Field Company, Canadian Engineers. At the outbreak of the Great War, he became involved in recruiting, and in 1915 enlisted in the 64th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in Canada, England, and later in France (1916-1918) with the 21st Battalion C.E.F. Wounded in October 1918, Major McLauchlan was demobilized the next year.
In the post-war years, Guy McLauchlan worked in the family business, and was employed "in a small way" with Canadian Customs. He was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1926 to command the Carleton Light Infantry (Reserve of Officers). At the outbreak of World War Two, he volunteered for service and was appointed controller of the radio-telegraphs operated by vessels entering the port of Halifax. He was also involved in supervising candidates for the Royal Officers' Training College and was made officer commander of "B" Company 2nd Battalion Carleton and York Regiment (Reserve Force). C. Guy McLauchlan died in 1954.
