The University Archives houses the institutional records of the University of Calgary, records of individuals and groups associated with the university, and a growing collection of private records which reflect areas of research interest on campus. Holdings include university administrative records, including operating files, minutes, correspondence and reports. Access to some material may be restricted. Semi-official records include acquisitions from the Students' Union and the Faculty Association and from individuals such as the first principal, Dr. A.L. Doucette, and the first president, Dr. H.S. Armstrong. Yearbooks are available as well as calendars, annual reports, handbooks, newsclippings, convocation lists and commemorative programmes. The Archives also retains various newsletter publications including the very early University Report, the Gazette, and the student newspaper, the Gauntlet. Approximately 100,000 photographs have been organized and indexed. Archival copies of University of Calgary masters theses and doctoral dissertations are housed in the University Archives. The bibliography of theses and dissertations provides access by author, title, supervisor, department, subject, and geographic region. Earlier records reflect the university's origins in the Calgary Normal School. The University Archives has an incomplete set of Normal School yearbooks published under various titles as well as a handsome leather-bound manuscript chronicle prepared by the class of 1936-1937. A preliminary announcement and a calendar from 1912- 1915 document an attempt to develop a university in Calgary nearly a century ago.
